Hay Bales at Sunset

Hay bales at sunset in Hindolveston, north Norfolk.

Technical: ND8 grad & CPL filters (CPL not doing much since it's shot directly at the sun).

There are a few things in this page that allows me to recogniza you're a top notch photographer. First of all the Picture, the perfect rule of thirds, pretty well balances, perfect in any way. Second of all the technical stuff you mention on you description. And third, your out of this world camera. The only thin missing was a D3 instead of the D300, im sure thats your next step =)

I like the feeling of rest in this shot. The day's work is done, everyone's gone home and all is well. The harvest is gathered. This wouldn't work half as well at sunrise. It's a psychological thing, I guess. The light could be just as beautiful but what would a scene depicting finished work feel like with the sun rising on it instead of setting?

I love the rainbow range of colours in the sky. It's wonderful how you've used the bales in the distance and the receding left overs of straw to create dof.

I will confess to liking this shot.

Best viewed large, really (a footnote to that respect would be warranted in my opinion).

This is certainly not the first hay bale shot I see on Flickr - but it probably is the best of the bunch. Everything works in this photograph as far as I am concerned.

The excellent composition is what attracted me to this shot in the first place. The main hay bale is placed in a logical focal point of the composition, but that is not so special of course. What is special on the other hand is the two sets of converging lines through the composition. Both the many small lines created by the remains of the hay on the ground (are they called bristles?) and the larger line created by the hay bales lead the eye so naturally through the shot to the sunset. Beautiful.

The sunset itself is very well captured with a minimum of overexposure and a stunning palet of beautiful colours, also in the wider surrounding sky. I like the proportions between land and sky you have selected here - the big hay bale needs space to shine and it gets it here. Quite effective also how it is half below and half above the horizon.

Focus is spot on (love those little parts sticking out of the big hay bale) with a good dof that creates a real sense of distance whilst still maintaining clarity even on the horizon. The icing on the cake is that small detail upfront right, where some hay has been left in a small heap breaking the monotony of the field just where it is needed.

The only very minor point for improvement mught be that a bit more space to the left of the sun (if at all possible) would have been nice - but that is very minor indeed.

Beautiful, beautiful pastoral shot, that evokes visions of Constable's paintings and classical music by the likes of Vaughan Williams. An instant fave.

I think this is a gorgeous shot. It's very well composed, not a lot of elements to confuse or make it look crowded. It's just perfect, to me. It reminds me of a Monet, or Millet. A very pastoral and calming scene, with the hint of a job well done with the harvest. The colors are beautiful and it has a crisp feeling to me. The chill of either the night or the chill of the early morning, either one works. Excellent job.

The composition is really good, great foreground subject and the field provides an awesome perspective which leads to the wonderful sunset!
