re-inking superman

Redrawn by other DC artists.
"Inked" using the polygonal lasso tool method I used on
Clor Quick re-color and re-letter.
I just read
an article at Comics Should Be Good about how DC had artists re-draw Kirby's Superman faces to match the official Superman look. I thought, "Hey: I'm
re-inking kirby's Thor ... why not try his Superman?"
The original pencils are nowhere near as detailed as the Thor ones, so it's much rougher, but I think it's a perfectly acceptable Superman.
This is my 1600th photo on flickr.

Congratulations on your 1600 picture. I
think. At this point, you should either A)
get out more or B) get paid for every
subsequent picture you post.
I'm sorry we missed your birthday lunch.
Parental obligations forced us to endure my
5th year of Imanya's carnival. It was hot,
loud, and crawling with ankle-biters. Not my
idea of fun. One day, I'm sure, I'll look
back on it all with fondness. Not.

That's about a zillion times more important
than lunch in Santa Monica. And you joke
about looking back, but just wait...

It's surprising how much the old inker put an
interpretation on Supe's personality. It may
have looked good to some folks at the time,
but it dates the drawing and it's cheesy,
too. And don't get me started on the S curl.
Demon Dogs and Donovan ... that's a concert
I'd like to see!

A long time ago, I went with my 'portfolio'
to show my drawings at a comics convention.
I showed it to Dick Giordano then the Art
director at DC for critique.
Whatever the merits of my drawings and
ability- his only comment was that my
Superman didn't have the 'S' shaped spit-curl
in my drawing.
I hadn't actually realised that it was part
of the Superman 'look' ( so at that moment I
was mortified--thinking everyone but me had
noticed-- and so no conversation was
possible)
apparently no-one told Jack either!:) (
about the 'S')

And yet there are so many famous images of
Superman *without* the S curl.
