Yet Another Year in the Life of a Melbourne Multimedia Designer

I wouldn’t call myself a connoisseur of all things PJ Harvey but I certainly have a passing interest in her music which, as it happens, is scattered throughout my iPod and other digital repositories! My girlfriend, on the other hand, is a big fan so when I saw the proliferation of Polly Jean Harvey Tour posters around town, I quickly snapped up two tickets to the Melbourne show of the Australian Tour.

Tonight was the night of the gig and I am so glad we got to go because PJ Harvey live… is something to behold. I wasn’t sure how it would all go tonight as PJ is basically performing a one-woman show and not being overtly familiar with her live sound - I had no idea how it would all translate in a live environment.

The lights dimmed down and a diminutive figure in a white dress strolled onto the stage. She slipped on the Gibson Firebird guitar and burst into a blistering version of ‘To Bring You My Love’. I literally felt the hairs on the back of my neck tingle as the electricity permeating the air was sending an aural shiver throughout the enclosed throng. Songs were stripped back to their most basic and organic structure and this is surely what they sounded like when she was writing them.

Heck, it was just so spellbindingly raw but tinged with meticulous melodic magic! I must’ve collected my jaw from the floor several times throughout the night as Ms Harvey showed her musical prowess song after song after song. I've seen Tori Amos and Diamanda Galas on that very stage in various shows through the years, but as good as they are, none could hold a candle to the sheer eclectic majesty that was PJ Harvey tonight.

Genius. Pure Genius.

An amazing concert going experience all round.

Cheers Matt! Coming from you, that is a huge compliment as I am a big fan of your shots! I thought this shot turned out ok too, seeing as I had to smuggle a Canon 400D in and take the shots without being busted by pesky ushers from the balcony! :)

(Kinda adds to the fun tho! Maybe one day, I'll be able to get photo passes to gigs!) heh!

S**t how can you smuggle a 400 in, it ain't subtle!

I love the tones on all the set. the wider focus shot with all the gear (keys etc) is really cool, a quality shot Sir };0)>

The trick is to have it all in your camera bag - strapped to your shoulder and move it so it is behind you... and always walk in about 2 songs in of the opening act. The usher never even bothers to check! ;)

great write up Hellblazer.

i managed to use that same method to get my 400d straight into the opera house gig...so happy i was.

funny thing happened in syd, she put her harmonica into her holder the wrong way and didn't realize until it was too late and finished the song without it.

also, someone in the crowd mentioned "west country" to which she replied "i like to think i put the c__t into west country" ( then apologized, a few times, for using such fowl language in such a grand place) the crowd loved it.

she mesmerized me

I thought some of the 'hecklers' at the Melbourne gig to be downright embarrassing, but she took it all in her stride and never missed a beat.

West Country is also a reference to the part of the UK she is from, so probably they were shouting support instead of insults... probably some tit with too much beer inside of them who didn't know when to STFU }:0)>

how many times do they think she wants to hear "i love you PJ'?...and after one song it was "but i love her more", "no, i love her the best"
......not what i went to hear. (yes STFU)

she never missed a beat there either, pure genius indeed.

i suspect the west country remark had something to do with nick caves "secret life of the love song" written about his west country tune and on display in his exhibition @ the vic arts center. If that was the case then no not insulting, just extremely bad taste.

Maybe, but Devon, her neck of the woods, is also known as The West Country... plenty of references on White Chalk to this so says the reviews}:0)>
