road closed (redux)

While race walking at the park yesterday, this was the sky. I race-walked home even faster to grab my car and camera to catch the shot I wanted—a Road Closed sign with no road, just endless clouds.

I tried the shot as a panorama. I tried it with a bit of lake. But at the end of the day, what worked best was my original vision.

The only bit of photo processing done to this photograph is a lessening of the midtone contrast. That's it. Nothing else.

For Take a Class with Dave & Dave.

"1. Street Signs. Street signs are boring. So the challenge here is to create a photo of a street sign that is interesting. Make use of composition, cropping/framing, processing, etc. to create an interesting image where the primary subject is a street sign."

excellent! one of those shots that could mean just about anything - lots of visual punch. I want to open up the greeting card and read the punchline though! :o)

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, you guys! I think this shot of the three nailed what I wanted. The other two are pretty, and it's easy to let pretty blind you to the truth. LOL.

i love sky and clouds so much and it's really interesting about the street sign. maybe we can name the foto "road closed, sky opens"

    20. RainAtDawn (64 months ago | reply)

What a wonderful mixed message, with the sign and the wide open sky. Maybe it's just my eyes / monitor, but the clouds look a little too processed (I don't know what you did to them or if it's just like that!), almost cgi-like. Which is a bit of a shame, as it looks wonderful in the thumbnail :)

From the caption under the photo: "The only bit of photo processing done to this photograph is a lessening of the midtone contrast. That's it. Nothing else." I disagree, though. I don't think it's a shame at all. I printed it out for someone, and it looks super. Maybe it's your monitor? :)

I'll take that under advisement. :)

      Thank you!

    22. RainAtDawn (64 months ago | reply)

I meant a shame for me :) And I'm not sure what effect that tweaking would have had on an image like this... as I said it could entirely be my monitor, no offence intended just constructive critique from the group.

we have been getting a lot of "movie" skies haven't we? Of course it might be because of the 20 degree swing in temp from day to day. But at least it's purty. Glad to know we'll have something cool to look at as we feeze or roast:) Did you see the grid of contrils tonight as the sun went down? Looked like some sort of net coming down on us. Pretty cool. And of course, my camera was... at ...work.

    25. dogfaceboy (64 months ago | reply)

Fabulous sky tonight, yes! I actually saw the contrails and took a picture from the upstairs window. I never used to be able to do that, but we just had our windows cleaned!

Wonderful shot. One of those special ones. All you need now is a giant finger pointing out of the clouds and it would be perfect.

I love the effect of this shot. It's like the edge of the world -- no more land, just sky and clouds. And the bad news is that the road to heaven is closed. I hope it's just a temporary closure!
