Pyle never finished this, as he went traveling and left it, even when he returned. This depicts a mermaid finishing her rescue of a drowning sailor. Pyle's intent is unknown, and his student, Frank Schoonover, added a fish and crab, but little else.
Pyle was well known, but more as in illustrator of American literature and magazines. Pyle’s influence and images continue to inform popular culture. Norman Rockwell described him as his “hero,” and contemporary illustrator James Gurney (the Dinotopia series) is an unabashed Pyle fan.
