Well that is an illegal violation of your medical privacy rights under the HIPAA act.

There is such a thing as a "legal violation"?

I don't like Cedars for a lot of reasons, but this is surely the capper. Not that other hospitals don't have similair policies, but these seem especially absurd.

From what I understand it is (or at least was about 10 years ago) pretty common practice for the secret service to visit local mental hospitals in advance of a presidential visit to ask them if they had any patients who they thought would try to harm the president. Given the existing ethical guidelines in place for mental health care professionals they may well be obligated to share information on patients who they believe do post an actual danger to the president. Assassinating the president being a crime and all.

I thought everyone knew about this practice. The Secret Service tracks everyone who publicly threatens the president, even people who aren't sane. I think this is pretty well-known to most of us after Reagan was shot. Certainly not a surprise to me.

It's not the protection of the president bit that bothers me. It's the "For fundraising purposes" part that irks me.

I mean, I suppose I can understand why they'd want to release the information of someone rattling on about killing the president, but to exploit someone's illness for fundraising purposes is pretty damn unethical.

This is only common sense...

I'm sure ER staffers hear alot of crazy talk from patients who come in each day. These patients have to know that just because they are threatening the President in a medical setting does not mean that those rants are covered by HIPPA - they are not. This just makes it explicit.

Incredible. Bush is like a cancer that has invaded every part of the social body. Time for chemo.

rrsafety: I'm not buying it. What you identify here should be covered under "law enforcement". This seems to be explicitly targeted to permit the secret service (whose primary purpose is to protect the president) to review your records without any limit other than "presidential safety". Our current president seems to have very distorted ideas about what his (and our) safety requires and I would have no confidence that they would respect my data.

Not to say that I think other hospitals don't do the same thing without "asking" for permission.

I'm with DPoem. The 'prez' already has all the information he needs on me, but I am tired of my phone ringing during dinner, and my mailbox being filled with garbage.

You should show page 3 where it explains the fund raising purposes. I suspect it's for getting money to research or build clinics based on medical needs like diabetes and other diseases that affect the organizations members. I also suspect in those cases your name, phone number, and other protected health information would be protected.

Should be called "Notice of Privacy (Nonexistent)".
You are right to post this - it's absolutely outrageous.
