Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Bad Signage, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group.

Perhaps he is reaching out to the multitudes of illiterate scruprutalists!

It makes sense, since Jesus was a man.

But funny if taken out of context :D

He appears to be exhorting people to follow the philosophical teachings of "Jesus" (or, at least, the teachings depicted in the bible) but not the supernatural aspect. Makes sense to me...

It doesn't make any sense if you've ever actually read the philisophical teachings of Jesus but whatever.

I can see why someone might say that - If they needed the carrot of the after-life to be a good person in this one.

Does anyone else find this guy's appearance and stance right out of a Monty Python sketch?

No, the other guy has it right. Much of Jesus' teaching was about God and heaven and all that, and only a portion of it was about being good. So taking Jesus as a whole is what it means to be a Christian. Does a yoga practitioner automatically become a Hindu? Can I just follow 3 petals of the eightfold path?

Of course, this means that many of us are much less Christian than we claim to be, but at least it is an ideal to work toward, which I think is something we all can agree is a good idea. Working toward an ideal, that is.

Er... not if that ideal is racial purity or absolutist monarchy or good old-fashioned patriarchy. In fact I'd say that ideals are generally a dangerous thing - especially religious ideals. As HL Mencken put it, 'An idealist is one who, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup'.

didn't jesus teach that he was god?

confused....

oh well. great picture anyway. i think the man with the cane really makes the photo - just the look on his face says it all.

p.s. never trust the teachings of a guy who stands on the street corner preaching or holding signs. that is usually a good sign that it's a wack job. just a thought.

Despite all the comments by people who don't get this...it's really quite simple.

In the gospels Jesus preached peace, forgiveness, kindness and tolerance. He preached that people should tend the sick and aid the poor and so on.

That is at odds with the modern practice of Christianity which is about increasing church power and the church's influence over politics and society.

All of the good works Christ espoused are neglected in favor of pushing intelligent design, pushing Christianity into schools, opposing abortion, opposing stem cell research (and many other branches of scientific research) and oppressing homosexuals. None of that is what Christ wanted his followers to do.

Where is the charity? Where is the 'turning the other cheek'? Why is the church no longer a peacemaker? Why is it a house of political activism and not a house of Christ?

So...the sad part is that to follow the teachings of Jesus you really do have to abandon god and his old-testament proclamations. They are incompatible with following Christ.
