The above idylic spot probably did not
survive. This is Costa Maya, not Playa del
Carmen, Actually, this picture was taken at
the town the ship's crew told us about. We
went by taxi when the ship pulled into Costa
Maya, a very commercial cruise ship
destination that was recently carved out of
the jungle in Mexico 175 miles south of
Cancun, just above the border with Belize.
This part of the town was just a sand street
along the water, the restaurants just
grass-roofed platform. The people were
wonderful and the meal was fantastic.
I just hope all the folks who lived there
got out before Dean, at Cat. 5 strength, hit
it. The town, which I believe was Majahual,
was hit with 165mph winds with gusts up to
200 mph and some reports say that waist-deep
water now covers most of the town.
