Thanks! Google Earth is an amazing program, and has changed my life. It is also giving our 10-year old boy a great education. It does, however, have its flaws. One is that it fails to identify bodies of water and mountain peaks clearly, unless your point of view is in just the right x+y+z coordinates. So thanks for filling us in on that one. Does it always look like this, or were we lucky to catch it on not just a clear day, but one with low tide?

@Doc: this is a) exceptionally clear, a more normal day in this area would be 8/8 stratus cloud at < 1500AGL with light rain due to the prevailing westerlies; and b) low tide - the lighter areas are exposed sandbanks which are normally underwater.

Bonus factoid - you can just make out the point where Hadrian's Wall ends...
