A silent movie set, built by a crew led by my grandfather, George W. Searls, in Fort Lee, New Jersey. (See Grace Apgar's correction below. She's his daughter and is exactly the same age as this photo.) The back of the picture says "Universal Studios" and is dated 1912. The lesson here is that the first movies were often theater productions, because theater was the elder institution.. Likewise newspapers, magazines and radio on the Net look and sound like antecedents in their original media.
