2008_07_04_1800hr_gapfire![]() Fire progress at 6pm on 4 July. The new red dots are mosty interior to the fire perimeter. Note that California chapparal wildfires do not always spread from their edges, but as well from hot embers and burning debris lifted by flames from one location and dropped by gravity at others. This makes fighting fires very difficult, especially on the ground. You can obtain the same data by going to Active Fire Maps, clicking on the "KMZ: Download" link, and downloading the .kmz file. Depending on your computer setup, either Google Earth will automatically load the .kmz data in a displayed form, or you will have to open the .kmz file in Good Earth. Either way, if you search for "Goleta, CA" on Google Earth, it will bring yu to the scene above, which you can adjust by zooming in and out and doing the other kinds of stuff Google Earth allows. The above is a screen shot of Google Earth with the latest Active Fire Mapping .kmz data shown.
