romanesco

I wish you could take this away =)
I like that piece as it adds a point of reference to the picture instead of leaving it completely abstract :)
Definately. I agree completely
erhh?... with who do you agree?
romanesco by docman.
See 'romanesco' on black!

Found at the local supermarket yesterday: a -for me- new vegetable, called romanesco, seemingly a cross between cauliflower and broccoli. But foremost an interesting object with a shape and color reminding me of coral or outerworldly landscapes.
By the way, haven't tasted it yet!

This was the #1 photo by Flickr - Interesting on the date August 13th 2005.</a

epilogue (February 2006):
I never did taste it. The thing was too foreign for Luz to want to cook it. So instead, I photographed its demise during the following months. The process of this decay can be followed in the set Romanesco's Fall. Hopefully I'll get to eat it this year. If so, I'll let you guys know!

epi-epilogue (Oktober 2008): well, we did finally eat one! For the results see here and here

we get one like this, but it just looks like a green cauliflower - it doesn't have the bizarre spiral thing happening

I have enjoyed you guys' comments tremendously, thanks a lot everybody! Especially to Cobalt123, who started this ball rolling! Never had a pic getting this kind of response. It was a kick seeing it develop.
I must say, personally I was surprised that it was this image, getting all the attention. My own preference goes to
romanesco3
Any way, who cares, maybe I can let you guys know tonight what the thing tasts like...
I love CiroNT's link to www.chromasia.com/iblog/archives/0411202114_c lean.php Furthermore it turns out there are many other romanesco shots on flickr already. The one I like best is Kodama's:

Funny stuff! I've never seen this one!

Looks like it's a hybrid, with no actual manual manipulations of genes. www.fourmilab.ch/images/Romanesco/ says it dates back to the 16th century!

ROMANESCO UPDATE, UPDATE!
READ ALL ABOUT IT!

Well, my wife refused to cook the thing; says it doesn't look like something we should eat...
So, here is my alternative plan: I will document its decay over the coming weeks. Gave it a nice sunny spot in the yard on a pretty yellow plate. Let's see if this will result in a worthy series of shots under the title: DUST TO DUST!
And for anyone still curious about its taste, I can only say: go out there and buy one yourself...

Hi... I'm from Rome :) This vegetable is quite common round here - we call it "Broccolo Romanesco", hence the name. It's a mess you decided not to eat it - I like it very much, in particular my mother's recipe with white wine. Moreover, from the look you also had a pretty fresh one! The shot is wonderful, I tried to take some shots on a broccolo some years ago but the results weren't even close you yours!

Fractals in Nature.
This is obvious use of math in nature.
It's one thing to repeat a pattern exactly,
It's another to repeat a pattern a 3/4 scale each time.
It amazes that "knowledgeable" people say life came about by accident.
