this is seriously weird!
we get one like this, but it just looks
like a green cauliflower - it doesn't have
the bizarre spiral thing happening
this would be great in the "fractals
in life" pool

roman broccoli is what the markets call it
here - haven't seen it for a while, though
that could be the area I live in and not a
reflection on the suppliers.

I can see it now: a huge surge in the sales
of romanesco! Growers can't keep up with the
demand, and flickrnauts can't keep up with
the romanesco uploads. ^_^

Well, it's Sunday, a new day after the one
this pic reached the nr.1 spot in
'interestingness'.
I have enjoyed you guys' comments
tremendously, thanks a lot everybody!
Especially to Cobalt123, who started this
ball rolling! Never had a pic getting this
kind of response. It was a kick seeing it
develop.
I must say, personally I was surprised that
it was this image, getting all the attention.
My own preference goes to

Any way, who cares, maybe I can let you
guys know tonight what the thing tasts
like...
I love CiroNT's link to www.chromasia.com/iblog/archives/0411202114_c
lean.php Furthermore it turns out there are many
other romanesco shots on flickr already. The
one I like best is Kodama's:

Funny stuff! I've never seen this one!
Looks like it's a hybrid, with no actual
manual manipulations of genes. www.fourmilab.ch/images/Romanesco/ says it dates back to the 16th century!

ROMANESCO UPDATE, UPDATE!
READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Well, my wife refused to cook the thing;
says it doesn't look like something we should
eat...
So, here is my alternative plan: I will
document its decay over the coming weeks.
Gave it a nice sunny spot in the yard on a
pretty yellow plate. Let's see if this will
result in a worthy series of shots under the
title: DUST TO DUST!
And for anyone still curious about its
taste, I can only say: go out there and buy
one yourself...

Hi... I'm from Rome :) This vegetable is
quite common round here - we call it
"Broccolo Romanesco", hence the
name. It's a mess you decided not to eat it -
I like it very much, in particular my
mother's recipe with white wine. Moreover,
from the look you also had a pretty fresh
one! The shot is wonderful, I tried to take
some shots on a broccolo some years ago but
the results weren't even close you yours!

Oh Docman, not to get to eat it! What an
unadventurous cook your wife is... BTW it
tastes like regular broccoli, no difference
other than the shape and colour;-)
How'd the decay idea pan out?

@quadrapop: wait a little longer... and by
the way, my wife is certainly not an
unadventurous cook in general! on the
contrary, this thing, however, rubbed her the
wrong way somehow...
