Bernice Cooper, 14, is staying at the Sasha Bruce House in Washington DC. She says she was five when her dad died from a drug related stroke or heart attack. After years of being beaten by her mother she temporarily stayed with a cousin and her older sister before coming to the shelter.

Imoni Maxwell is 14 years old and is currently staying at the Sasha Bruce House, a shelter for teens in Washington DC.
She has had four different foster families since she was eight years old and said she left the last one after she felt threatened by her foster mother.
Her biological mother was using drugs during her pregnancy with Imoni and was not able to take care of her. For the first few years, Imoni was raised by her ailing grandmother and then by an aunt, she entered the foster care system six years ago.

Ashleigh Cannon is 17 and lives at the Sasha Bruce House in Washington, D.C. She is part of the ILP (Independent Living Program) and has been at the facility for several months. Her mother asked her to leave after Ashleigh alerted Police to drugs and violence in her home.
Ashleigh just had her 17th birthday and her mother came to visit her and wrote this message on the mirror.
