motion

motion by D'Arcy Norman.
my very own Social Network Pause Button. No inbox. No RSS. No IM. Nothing but me, my bike, and the wind.

Idea taken from Jen's photo which was in turn a response to Merlin's post.

At first I didn't like the overly blurred photo, but this works for me on so many levels. The motion blur, and slight blur of the bike itself. That's what it feels like when I'm riding. Reality blurs. It's just me, in focus, and everything else just blurs by as I pass through. The only other way I could describe it would be like The Ring Effect, when Frodo slips that sucker on...

This was taken at about 25km/h, riding uphill into a 50km/h headwind, with my Canon XT tightly wrapped around my left hand as I leaned out to get the shot :-)

I like it. It breathes speed.

I've had the pause button on much of the summer...just this week left before i'm fully connected again!

This shot works for me too--thanks for describing how you took it--I might try the same when I go out this weekend.

thanks.

I also set the camera to Aperture priority mode, and cranked the aperture as far close as it would go - f/22 with the lens I had on - so that it would properly expose while hinting at the longest possible exposure. I also used the lowest ISO my camera can do - ISO 100 - to minimize light sensitivity. As such, I got a 1/40sec exposure, so there was lots of motion blur at the speed I was riding :-)

I might try with a wider lens (the 50mm is a bit long to handhold while riding...), and it might be fun to play with popping a flash for the shot - either front or rear curtain - to see the effects of stopping the motion while still allowing motion blur... and the flash would pull in details like the tread on the tire, the lettering on the side, and the decals on the fork... hmmmmmm...

I like it as it is, but Go Flash Go! I think that would look awesome! Try it.
You do cool stuff D'Arcy.

thanks, lawrie! I totally should have forced the on-camera flash. either front- or rear-curtain would have looked cool with a long exposure!

my hands were kind of full, juggling a DSLR in my left hand, leaning way out, trying to aim, stretching my thumb to reach the trigger, and pedaling into the wind... next time though ;-)
