dorkcam

3 strips of masking tape to help dampen the wind noise while riding.
12" bungee fed from inside the helmet to make a loop to hold the camera, then hooked onto itself on either side of the camera to make it snug.
Good serious pose
nah. it's a good "precaffeinated, about to look like a total dork in public, and I hope it's worth it" pose :-)
dorkcam by D'Arcy Norman.
strapped a Flip Ultra video camera to record the morning commute. It was a bit awkward - aimed slightly to the right, and making the helmet lopsided - but the video turned out to be not completely unwatchable...

Looking kind of Cylon. It works on you (especially with the cool shades).

Yup, that looks pretty dorky! :-) Maybe next time attach it to your chest using a bungee - more centred that way!

I was going to try attaching it directly to the bike, like I did with my still camera last year, but decided the vibration would be too much. Figured it might be cool to try tracking head movements - I wonder how well a chestcam would aim? even on the helmet, the camera wasn't aimed properly - too far to the right...

or. to really screw with our minds, a backcam. then you can see if anyone is making gestures at you while you bike down the road. or how close they come before switching lanes.

Can't wait for the feature film.

How is the flip and how well does it play with your mac? I was/am thinking about getting one, but the video on my small Canon still cam seems to be pretty good with about the same specs as the Flip.

ps- you have moved one step deeper into dorkdom LOL

@babs I really need about 4 cameras - one on the helmet (forward), one on helmet (rear), one mounted to record speedometer, one on lower fork to record road... maybe a fifth camera on a boom from the helmet to record the awesome grimaces and nasty huffpuffing too :-)

@tuchodi the flip works pretty darned well, once I installed Perian. It just shows up as a USB hard drive, and the .avi files can be copied directly from the Finder if i don't want to use the Flip software. The video quality isn't that bad - definitely NOT HD video, but better than nothing. And because it's so cheap, I'll try stupid stuff like strapping it to my helmet, which I would never do with a better video camera :-)

@roland dunno - I'd have been leery tacking a fancy schmancy videophone to my helmet, but a cheap Flip? That's almost disposable. I'll be trying lots of crazy stuff with it that I wouldn't dare with anything more expensive :-)

i understand d'arcy, i'm lucky enough to get the expensive phones for free from nokia blogger relations, the flip ain't cheap tho, right, it's about $200 including taxes right?

IIRC, my Flip was $150 at Wal*Mart. Enough that I'd wince if I dropped it, but not enough to prevent me from doing crazy stuff like bungee cording it to my helmet and riding at 50km/h :-)

If Nokia feels like sending me some hardware to play with, I'd be willing to strap it to my bike too!

@Carl the Calgary Police have enough other problems with online video that they'll probably give this one a pass...
