Ramita Shrestha

Ramita Shrestha by D'Arcy Norman.
This was Ramita's first public speaking, first presentation, first time out of Nepal. She knocked it out of the park with an amazing presentation in full photo-story style. I'm very humbled to have heard her speak. My challenges are completely trivial compared to what she has overcome.

Off (work) traveling again? I wish I could travel more... *glum* Or do you get much chance to sightsee on this trip anyway...

Re: this photo

I couldn't agree more, I think I have real issues and then I think of those who are far worse off than me and get back to reality

yeah - it's an Open Education conference, with a pretty diverse group of attendees from around the world.

Ramita is from a small village in Nepal, and she runs a community-access library with a handful of computers and a shared dialup connection. The village elders attempted to physically block her from coming to the conference (she was sponsored by a Foundation in the States) and after she managed to get past them, they attempted to confiscate the community's computers.

The people come to her library from all around the region - some traveling for 3 hours - to use the computers to find information online. Pages can take 30 minutes to an HOUR to download. Ramita does some common searches first thing in the morning, prints out the results, and posts them on a (real) bulletin board.

What a humbling eye-opener. I was grumbling about having to fly into Salt Lake, then drive an hour north to get to Logan. She has to deal with MUCH worse, on a regular basis. And I get cranky when web pages take longer than a few seconds to load...
