iPod Touch Sync Bug

These three playlists shouldn't be on the iPod.
None of my decade smart playlists are selected to sync -- so why do three of them show on the iPod?
iPod Touch Sync Bug by djwudi.
I'm having an odd issue when syncing with my iPod Touch. It started with just one, but now I have three playlists (0-1910s, 1990s, and 2000s) that show on the iPod, even though they're unselected in the Music tab in iTunes. Odder, the playlists themselves aren't being synced -- just the smart playlist rules, apparently, because they don't show anything unless it's been copied over as part of one of the other playlists and matches their particular rules. I've tried resetting and restoring the iPod to no avail.

A little more digging uncovers this from iLounge:

"From my experience, iTunes will always sync smart playlists, empty or not. This is due to the fact that some smart criteria can result in smart playlist matches while on the iPod. 'Last played' or 'play count' can change when songs are played on the iPod. These changes result in changes to smart playlists and can change an empty playlist into one with songs in it. I think iTunes makes no differentiation between smart criteria that can change a playlist on the iPod and those that don't. Therefore all smart playlists must be synced just in case."

So it seems that the Smart Playlists are being synced specifically because they match something on the iPod, despite the fact that you have them unchecked.

Finally got the Apple forums to load up and they confirm this - if an item in a Smart Playlist is on the iPod, the Smart Playlist will be synced even if you specifically tell it not to.

Oh - slightly OT, but can anyone point me to a good intro on how iTunes /iPod manages its smarts and files, with clear how to 's both for MAC and PC?

Well, that almost explains it, but not quite. If that were the case, than _all_ those date-based smart playlists should be on the iPod (or at least most of them), not only those three, or the one that this started with. Also, even though those playlists are on the iPod, they don't necessarily have anything in them -- for instance, neither the 1990s playlist nor the 0-1900s playlist actually have any songs while they're on the iPod, though they do in iTunes, _and_ there are songs on the iPod that _could_ be in them (at least in the 1990s playlist). So this is close to what I'm seeing, but not quite the same. Odd.

I think the safe assumption is that Smart Playlists and syncing are borked, or at least partially borked. May as well go on and sync them.
