Lost Show-to-Commercial Ratio

Tracking the amount of actual show to the amount of commercials during the last half of last night's 2-hour finale of Lost.

Over the final 72 minutes of the show...

    * there were 48 minutes of show and 24 minutes of commercial, for a 2:1 show-to-commercial ratio (It was nice to know that it wasn't _actually_ 1:1, though it really did feel like it),
    * there were 6 commercial breaks, averaging 4 minutes each,
    * most commercial breaks were four minutes,
    * the shortest commercial break was three minutes,
    * the longest commercial break was five minuets,
    * there were 6 show segments, averaging 8 minutes each,
    * the shortest show segment was five minutes,
    * the longest show segment was eleven minutes.

I don't know if you've noticed, but it used to be that in an "hour" show you'd get about roughly 50 minutes of actual programming and 10 minutes of commercials. Now it's 45 minutes of programming and 15 minutes of commercials.

The commercial networks are doing whatever they can to make watching TV as painful as they can. First it was the network/station logo in the corner then came the "popups" that would inform you of what you are watching, what is on next, what is on in two hours, two days, a month from now sometimes with sound effects! Local news (channel 4) thinks it's cool to add sound effects with booms, swishes and other noise to "improve" their dismal broadcasts.

...and high drama episodes always have more advertising.

We should just go back to reading books. That'll show the TV suits what for.

Yup -- I actually blogged about it too, though I originally forgot to add that link to the description here. Really, it's amazing I can force myself to sit through the dreck when I do manage to find a show I like!
