Wiz El Capitan
One Night Only!
Shortly after the dual premier of the El Capitan Theatre screening The Rocketeer the enormous and expensive $5,000,000 sign marquee was changed to this Hooray for Hollywood huge plastic one-piece colorful sign just for one night, and one picture postcard shot. (this isn't it, the postcard doesn't feature me next to the box office.) It's in the history books, but there was no film titled Hooray for Hollywood playing that night. This is a Polaroid test shot. I was asked to stand next to the box office for lighting tests and scale.
This image is no big deal now, they have rebuilt the sign with LED JumboTron and can change the display at whim or will to anything they fancy with a keystroke. Although preparing the sign for display may take a month with all the animation and video in the loop, and the technicians charge $120,000 annually to animate it.
Alas, back in the day $12,000 was all it cost to create the image on the plastic sheet and hire the crane crew to remove and replace this hand cut analog declaration celebrating the culture, boulevard and town.
