Distorted Reflections

I think this part is liquefied to make it look more curved, it would be more realistic looking. Great job!
missing a belly button :) but then this is really great for a 15 min draft.
well achieved
Distracting, turn the elbow more toward the mirror. This is great!

This is an illustration I am working on for my photojournalism class. It's on eating disorders and body image.

I just did the editing in about 15 min. so it's a pretty rough draft. Feedback would be much appreciated.

I'm sucking in for the front image to get the ribs out a little more and then I used the bulge liquify tool on the reflection to make it look obese. Needs a lot of work .. the reflection but it's going to wait till after I turn in my movie Monday.

Replaced: Dec. 11. - is it looking any better now? I did a little work on it.

Replace: Dec 10, 2008: Sorry about the watermark but people keep stealing this image.

Great idea, nice angle and nice light. But there is something just not right about the belly in the mirror. There is something funny in the area around the pants. But that is just my opinion, you wanted feedback :-)
I do love the story of the image though, well done!

idle a while  Pro User  says:

Whoa. I really like the concept! Everything works. The only thing is that the stomach of the reflection looks a little flat/smudged. But I other than that. fantastic work!

edit/ I've noticed someone else mentioned the stomach.. I'm not sure how you can fix it. Is it just one image? or did you take one with the stomach in and one with the stomach out? Because if you have one with the stomach out, perhaps instead of smudging it you could select the outer area of the stomach and distort it with the distort or transform tool? And then maybe go in and give it a shadow and a belly button? It's just an idea, I really don't know what you've already tried. Anyhow, keep up the good work :)

this is very powerful.

As far as feedback, I think you could accomplish this in more understandable terms as a more subtle divide. I still recall a Newsweek cover I saw about 10 years ago...I was in middle or high school. There was a picture of a girl from the butt up and the words "Too Fat? Too Thin?" I looked at it and I really couldn't decide which she was.

I think if you made the thin version look a little more realistically thin (basically how thin could anyone be with a natural bone structure), and the fat version just slightly pot bellied, you could really draw the reader in in seeing how slightly skewed perspective can really alter your outlook and approach to health.

Basically, I think you want your viewer to be able to identify with the self perception, whereas now the difference is so extreme it's a bit alienating.

On the stomache on the fat version - I think you need a little shading underneath the belly - use the burn tool and it will probably work!

I hope my feedback is helpful. I really love your concept and execution and am just trying to give my thoughts on how to make it even more evocative.

as i have said before, i am one of hundreds who suffers from an eating disorder and this hits the nail on the head. Just a suggestion, even though i think it looks really great, i agree that th stomach needs a lil work, mainly creating more of a bellym to look more roundish. I have no idea how you would do this since i dont use any photo tools. (i would be to overwhelmed with the amount of options lol ) but just a suggestion.

Hawaii Shots  Pro User  says:

"A picture is worth a thousand words.." doesn't even begin to describe this work of art. While fortunately I don't have ED so I can't personally relate on the same level as those who do this picture is probably the best depiction that I've seen that would give the rest of us an idea just what it's like.

Sorry but I have neither the skills nor the experience to be able to suggest how you might improve upon this except perhaps by using an extremely low aperture so that the reflection is somewhat out of focus and it might still provide the desired result while hiding some of the imperfections? Then again having the reflection in sharp focus might be critical to the shot. Sorry, just a thought.

Still think it's an amazing photo just how it is now! Thank you for sharing.

As for feedback, perhaps why I missed the concept is that the highlights in the photo and mirror (the white top) are not the areas of main interest. Still, when you're not flipping through hundreds of shots - stop and look - its neat.
