Heslington Hall Courtyard

In common with many Elizabethan houses, Heslington Hall is in the shape of an E in honour of the Queen. The central bar of the E is the porch. It is not thought that Queen Elizabeth returned the favour by visiting this particular house. The house was extensively restored and refaced in Victorian times, decayed during the 20th century, but is now home to the University of York. While the University's alterations to the hall and its grounds can hardly be described as sympathetic, at least the hall survives with a distinct purpose.
