366.351 California Supreme Court Strikes Down Ban on Gay Marriages

My ex (of 17 years) and I on the phone yesterday, paraphrased:

HIM: Dd you hear the news?

    ME: No, what?

HIM: The California Supreme Court struck down the anti-marriage ruling- gays can get married now.

ME: Really, well, what do you know?

HIM: I am surprised that you hadn't heard about it already, but you are stuck in your little room, on the computer...

ME: Well, I don't have anyone to marry.

    HIM: Well, me either!!!

    ME: You did, though

HIM: Really? You asked me to get married?

ME: 4 or 5 years ago I told you that I wanted to get married and you said, "maybe, we'll see, if you lose 100 pounds or so, then maybe--"

    HIM: Oh.

Sooner or later, you'll find someone who loves you, someone you love; someone who wants to marry you.

Big hoorah for California! I live in Belgium and I'm married for five years now, earlier wasn't possible. Belgium was the second country in the world were same sex marriages are legal.

Uh, that was a low blow indeed. That doesn't sound like a person who deserves to marry you anyway.

Congratulations on the court decision. I'm glad that Bush and the religious right doesn't decide everything over there.

      Beautiful image, Doug.
      Have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks, everyone, for your nice words and support.

Yes, he said that to me, more or less, and it's funny how it seems all crystal clear from this side of three years ago, when he left, than the other side, when I thought I was going to be living with this man for the rest of my life. After all, it had been 17 years. But there was so much WRONG with our relationship, mainly about demands upon me and "or elses," things that I didn't want to "fix," or didn't know how to change, and so it fell apart.

But- YAY for California (where Bush has little, if any, impact)- in 30 days the state will be able to issue mariage licenses to same-sex couples, and though there is a lot of conservative resistance to the court's ruling ("legislating from the bench," etc.), the passage of an amendment to the California constitution seems unlikely, though it is a threat we cannot afford to ignore, either. But even Republican Governor Schwarzenegger vows to work to keep that damn amendment from passing!!!

Even if you were a 100 punds heavier than what you are now, Doug, I would marry you...if given half the chance your ex. got!

Those two gentlemen seem a bit wary of the marriage ceremony . . .

view profile Perhaps not wary, exactly, but I think that either of us would be really happier marrying someone else than each other..

view profile "Listen, everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for,
      a wedding, what's a wedding, it's a prehistoric ritual
where everybody promises fidelity forever, which is
maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of, which is
followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he'll realize he's
saddled with a nut, and wanna kill me, which he should--
      Thanks a bunch,
      But I'm not getting married--
      Go have lunch,
      'Cause I'm not getting married--
      You've been grand,
      But I'm not getting married--
      Don't just stand there,
      I'm not getting married--
      And don't tell Paul,
But I'm not getting married today.

      Go, can't you go?
      Why is no-
      Body listening?
      Goodbye,
      Go and cry
      At another person's wake.
      If you're quick,
      For a kick,
      You could pick
      Up a christening,
      But please,
      On my knees,
There's a human life at stake!"

      I phoned my analyst
      And he told me
      To see him on Monday
But I told him on Monday
I'll be floating in the Hudson
      With the other garbage

      I'm not well

      (tell that to your analyst)

Madeline Kahn's rendition is priceless and her theatrical gestures (drooping and picking the bouquet, the dead pan look, glance at the heavens) are priceless.

view profile I loved how Madeline Kahn sang it, too- her expressions, the perfect enunciation (I tried singing the lyrics with the words right in front of me and I I tripped up every time!), her expressions. Brilliant. She died too soon.. what a shame.

view profile Thanks, Kotie! It's odd how someone can love you and want to be wth you and then slowly change their minds, and then try to make you the bad guy. Thanks for the hugs!!!

      wow, what an asshole. =/

    26. Diogioscuro (48 months ago | reply)

Thanks, Alex- today began the official issuing of licenses for marriage to same sex couples. Some places opened at 5:01pm this evening to be ready for the crowds- the county clerk in Kern County, where Bakersfield is situated, decided "due to financial restraints," that they will no longer offer marriage ceremonies to anyone. But she is a fervent Christian and consulted anti-gay marriage groups to figure out what to do. Fortunately they cannot by law refuse to issue the licenses!

I believe that this photo expresses the main idea of our readings. Especially in response to Soto's "Limits of Ethics in Considering Homosexual Unions" & documents of Vatican II. In opposition of horizontal finality, this photo depicts vertical finality, our innate dynamism of being to develop toward fuller being - where our creation reaches its ultimate goal. This picture features another probable aspect of marriage, which should be open to all possibilities.
