Blazing Bristlecone
This photo is the winner of the "Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2010": www.nmm.ac.uk/visit/exhibitions/astronomy-photographer-of...
White Mountains, California. An ancient Bristlecone Pine stands before the Milky Way as a meteor streaks the sky.
(I accidentally cast some artificial light onto the tree while setting up my dolly timelapse move.)
Canon 5D Mark II. ISO 3200. 32-second exposure. 16mm. f/3.2

The light works well, I think it looks better than a large silhouette in the foreground

i love that tree and the sky above..it has an "ancient" air old tree, and millions of years old galaxy

the artificial light is obvious but nothing anyone unfamilier to night skies would notice. i'd leave it as is to hook them on taking the time to experience it on their own.
the magenta looks a bit strong to me.. but i'm still jelouse!

Larry, thanks. I'm a little worried about the color correction, because I'm on a new laptop, and the color space is really funky. The only machine and monitor I really trust is my big editing PC at home.

You da' man, Tom. Were you pointed South for this? I'm guessing the glow is Bishop... I found it a bit bothersome when I took some photos there last year.

Spectacular shot Tom. that sky is awesome with the Milky Way in there. I saw skies similar to this while in Monument Valley and was just awestruck. Hard to go to sleep and miss it. BTW.....mine is better obviously:-)))

Love this, and while I like the non-artificial light one I do think this one reverberates more in my psyche. Not overdone in the least either, excellent execution Tom.
