New York City, 2008

Want to buy redonkulously large limited edition prints of this image? Behold! A place to do so.

This is a panorama I shot of New York City about a month ago (June 2). This was created with 20+ images stitched together. The image you see here is actually a dramatically reduced version; the original is 25162x3830 (pixels). Obviously, this is best viewed at full size.

I shot this from Jersey City, directly across from the former site of the World Trade Center. The shoot took so long that the light changed from the time I started shooting lower Manhattan to the time I got the camera panned to upper Manhattan, which caused a bit of a serendipitous color gradient effect.

If you like my photography, check out my blog at backingwinds.blogspot.com. I do a bit of storm chasing here and there, so it shouldn't be too boring. :) Storm chasing blog with lotsa pics is at bigstormpicture.com.

This is an absolutely amazing shot.

It must have taken 10 or 20 minutes to do.

quite amazing...i was just in nyc and am kicking myself for not hitting the jersey shores to shoot it from this angle....love the effect you got with the sky due to the timing.

"I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York's skyline. Particularly when one can't see the details. Just the shapes. The shapes and the thought that made them. The sky over New York and the will of man made visible. What other religion do we need? And then people tell me about pilgrimages to some dank pesthole in a jungle where they go to do homage to a crumbling temple, to a leering stone monster with a pot belly, created by some leprous savage. Is it beauty and genius they want to see? Do they seek a sense of the sublime? Let them come to New York, stand on the shore of the Hudson, look and kneel. When I see the city from my window - no, I don't feel how small I am - but I feel that if a war came to threaten this, I would throw myself into space, over the city, and protect these buildings with my body."

Ryan - heads-up. A link directly to the original version of this pic has worked its way to the head of the del.icio.us and reddit sections on popurls tonight. Your strategy is either working or spinning out of control. ;)

As always, really great work. You're right about the gradient effect being a nice (if unexpected) touch. I dig it!

Paul -- if that's where you're staying, this is exactly what you'll see. :) This was shot from the pier directly adjacent to the Hyatt.

      Saw this on Digg.

Curious, is it a white-balance issue that the left side is so warm and the right side is so cool (red/blue tint)? Or is the city really lit that way?

    32. ryanmcginnisphoto (36 months ago | reply)

ahawks81: It's like that because this was a panorama shot at dusk. It's made up of a large number of individual photographs, and taking all of them took some time. When I started, it was still Blue Hour, but as I progressed from right to left, the twilight faded, until all that was left was the light pollution of the city. This was an unintentional effect (I have several other panoramas taken both at night at before twilight), but it worked wonderfully.
