The last lighting | Pigeon Point lighthouse

The last lighting | Pigeon Point lighthouse

Finally got around to processing this shot from last November where they lit the fresnel lens one last time for a small group of VIPs that donated a substantial amount to the restoration project. I just happen to be staying there that night and had absolutely no idea this was taking place. Good thing I brought my camera gear and flash. I popped a couple of flashes with my sb-800 off-camera towards the fence to light up my lead in.

Have a great week folks!

Got crack? | Tenaya Lake

Got crack? | Tenaya Lake

Last week Jave Carnal and I set out to the high sierras for one thing--Frozen lakes. We got plenty of that but what we lacked was some decent light. Clear blue skies for both sunrise and sunset. We call that skunk city.
Guess the photogs that were here over the holidays used it all up for themselves ; )
It was still fun to be out there surrounded by such amazing outdoor beauty. Despite the lack of nice light and color, it was a productive trip. We scouted some cool spots to shoot when the fall color returns.
Looks like Tioga Pass is now closed and snow is in the forecast this weekend.

Super stoked about my upcoming trip to Kauai in early February.

Laguna Creek

Laguna Creek

Sometimes the epic light just isn't there. Not sure why I welcomed the challenge but it is nice to know that I came away with something completely different than what I had in mind.
The fog rolled in and swallowed any little chance of there being a colorful sunset. I walked over to the south side of LC in search of my comp. I found this row of rocks that served as my lead in and tinkered with the shutter speed to capture the water motion.
converted to monochrome with SEP 2.

apollo orb test

apollo orb test

during the holidays, I received the apollo orb which is a 43 inch octabox light modifier. I wanted to push the limits a bit and tested this with an LP160 speedlite under harsh, mid-afternoon light conditions.
It comes with a white diffuser that u velco on the orb but here I went without it to get more of a punchy result. I had to go full power on the flash zoomed at 24mm.
The orb sat close just outside of the frame camera left.
At $129 a pop, it's not the least expensive modifier but I do like the result such as the circular catchlight in the eyes. If I had a preference though, I think I'd go with a soft-silver parabolic light modifier from Paul Buff. It's cheaper, better built, and even comes with a case for easy travel as long as u choose the umbrella shaft over the speedring kit.
I hope to test some more with better pleasing subjects in the near future ; )

Happy New Year folks!
