Skates on display in market

Skates on sale in Rome.The open food markets in Italy are alsways a joy to watch. When I visited Rome with my daughter we came across these friendly looking creatures on display next to a tuna and a swordfish. They looked a bit puzzled with all the Romans passing by .

These are not stingrays but skates. Skates don't have "stingers" but instead have non-venomous thorns. The things that look like eyes are actually their nostrils. The eyes are on the other side.
