Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii), aka Big Blue Darter, Chicken Hawk, Hen Hawk, Mexican Hawk, Quail Hawk, Striker and Swift Hawk - Third Lake, IL - 7 February 2010
Two interesting observations:
1. The 'filmy' look to the hawk's eye is a nictitating membrane, a translucent third eyelid that can be drawn across the eye for protection and to moisten the eye while also keeping visibility.
2. The inset photo was taken ~ 4 seconds after the base image . . . note the way the hawk opens its talons before flight, as well as the fur or feathers sticking to the claws.
