Royal Tipitaka Patron 2003 |
ROYAL PATRON OF TIPITAKA
ประธานกิตติมศักดิ์การพระราชทานและประดิษ
ฐานพระไตรปิฎกสากลในนานาประเทศ พ.ศ.
2546-2551
Born in London and studied in Lausanne,
Switzerland, Her Royal Highness Princess
Galyani Vadhana was a granddaughter of
King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao the
Great of Siam, who in 1893 printed the
Buddhist sacred text --the 39-volume
Pali Tipitaka in book-form-- for the
first time in the world. The auspicious
initiation and patronage of Tipitaka by
King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao was
meritoriously followed a century later
by his granddaughter, the Royal
Matriarch of the present reign.
As a pioneering university lecturer in
liberal Arts in Thailand, the Princess
Matriarch was also a leading scholar in
French language and literature.
When leaning about the World Tipitaka
Project which would follow the
meritorious tradition of King of Siam's
Tipitaka printing, the Princess kindly
granted an official audience in 2003 to
founding members of the Dhamma Society
Committee and the World Tipitaka
Patrons.
After six months of intensive
fact-finding investigation of the World
Tipitaka Project in Roman script, the
Princess in 2004, graciously accepted to
become the Founding Honorary President
of the Tipitaka Presentation Worldwide,
thereby following the great meritorious
tradition of her Grandfather.
In 2005, as the Honorary President of
the World Tipitaka Project, the Princess
made a special pilgrimage to Columbo to
present an inaugural Tipitaka set as a
Gift of Dhamma to Her Excellency the
President of Sri Lanka.
As Tipitaka Patron, the Princess
initiated a private donation fund for
the printing cost of Roman-script
Tipitaka and has advised the World
Tipitaka Project to initiate a
modern-day Tipitaka Studies for lay
people both in Thailand and abroad.
In 2007, in grateful response to the
Princess's educational advice, a
40-volume Tipitaka Studies Reference in
Pali-language / Roman script was
published for the first time in Bangkok,
in honour of Her Royal Highness the
Princess Honorary President. It was
printed specially on the occasion of the
Princess's 84 Birthday Anniversary.
As the elder sister of His Majesty the
King and being the esteemed and most
senior member of the royal family, the
Princess was the Royal Matriarch of the
Royal Family until she passed away in
February 2008.
