The World Tipiṭaka Project, 1999-today

The World Tipiṭaka Project in Roman-Script.

The World Tipiṭaka Project was initiated in Bangkok, by the Dhamma Society Fund in 1999. It was a meritorious response to a request from abroad to support the first printing of the Roman-script Pāḷi Tipiṭaka from the Buddhist Era 2500 Great International Council which was convened by 2500 Theravada Buddhist monks between 1954-1956 in Yangon, Burma.

The project was completed its 40-volume publication in 2005. This Roman-script edition is thus the world's first publication of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka from the Great International Council in B.E.2500 (1956).

The inauguration of the World Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Presentation was organised in Colombo, Sri Lanka and later in Bangkok, Thailand and Uppsala in Sweden.

The World Tipitaka was presented to the Library Carolina Rediviva of Uppsala University where the King of Siam edition was presented to as a royal gift by King Chulachomklao of Siam over a century ago.

In Thailand the inaugural set was presented to the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand in Bangkok and has been preserved as an authoritative reference for the nation.

The World Tipiṭaka Project was originally organised voluntarily and has been supported by Tipiṭaka patrons worldwide in order to preserve the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka --a Wisdom Heritage of Humanity-- in its supreme purity for the future generation.

Maniratana Bunnag expressed her deepest appreciation and acted as leader in organizing the World Tipiṭaka Edition to be published and propagated all over the world...

I would, therefore, like to offer commendation for this profound meritorious act. May happiness and peace pervade the whole universe through the omnipotent power of the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Saṅgha, through the omnipotent power of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka with 84,000 Dhammakhandhas, through the omnipotent power of Phra Syāmadevādhirāja, the Guardian Deity of Siam, and through the omnipotent power of the highest god brahma and deities of the whole universe. May Their Majesties, King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great Dhamma Protector and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, who are both endowed with benevolent and excellent qualities and ever-firmly devoted to Buddhasāsana, and all the members of royal lineage, be blessed with longevity, happiness and peace.

May the highest brahma gods and deities, as well as human and all beings, joyously celebrate and bless those who have piously donated money and kind toward this profound meritorious act of preparation the complete Romanised Pāḷi Tipiṭaka published in the Kingdom of Thailand, the first of its kind in the world, for their happiness and prosperity, now and always." (This Benediction was delivered by H.H. the Supreme Patriarch in October 1999.)

"...บัดนี้ ได้มีการปริวรรตอักษรที่พิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก ฉบับมหาสังคายนาสากล นานาชาติครั้งสำคัญฉบับนี้เป็นอักษรโรมัน ท่านผู้หญิงมณีรัตน์ บุนนาค ได้อนุโมทนาและเป็นประธานอุปถัมภ์การพิมพ์ เผยแผ่ให้แพร่หลายในนานา อารยประเทศ เนื่องในวโรกาสมหามงคลสมัยที่สมเด็จบรมบพิ ตร พระราชสมภารเจ้า พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พระมหากษัตริย์พุทธมามกะแห่งสยามประเทศทรง เจริญพระชนมพรรษา ๗๒ ในปีพระพุทธศักราช ๒๕๔๒
