Great International Tipiṭaka Council B.E. 2500 (1957)

...When Buddhasāsana reached the twenty-fifth century of the Buddhist Era 2500, Theravāda Buddhist countries gathered together and convened the Great International Council in Myanmar from B.E.2498-2500 (1955-1957).

Exactly 2500 international erudite monks were selected to go over the Pāḷi text of the Tipiṭaka prepared in the Burmese script together with the Pāḷi versions in various national scripts from other countries of the world. This Tipiṭaka convocation is popularly referred to in Burmese as the Great Sixth Council or better known worldwide as the B.E.2500 Great International Buddhist Council.

In 1999, upon a request from abroad, the Dhamma Society in Thailand was asked to initiate a project to undertake anew the entire proof-reading and editing of this historic international manuscript, over 20,000 pages, then printed in the Burmese script. The project took over six years to complete. The newly edited --a transliterated Roman-script edition in 40-volume set-- was finally published in Bangkok in 2005.

This Romanised-script publication, the most complete edition with the scholarly editing and revision of all the footnotes and references as well as open-standard database, is now known as the the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script.

World Tipiṭaka Edition 1956-2005

The first special inaugural 40-volume set was presented in Colombo to the President of Sri Lanka, the cradle of the world's written Tipiṭaka, by the Royal Matriarch of Thailand, on March 6, 2005.

In 2006, a limited commemorative collection of the Tipiṭaka Studies Reference, based on the World Tipiṭaka Database, was also published by the Dhamma Society in 40 volumes. The electronic Tipiṭaka WebService www.tipitakaquotation.net was made available in 2007.

"...ครั้นถึงช่วงระยะครบ 25 ศตวรรษแห่งพระพุทธศาสนา และประเทศพุทธศาสนาต่างก็จัดงานสมโภชเป็นก ารใหญ่ในประเทศของตน ก็ได้มีการสังคายนาระหว่างชาติขึ้นเป็นครั ้งแรก ที่ประเทศ เมียนมาร์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2496-2499 ที่พระสงฆ์และนักปราชญ์จากประเทศพุทธศาสนา เถรวาททุกประเทศ และประเทศที่มีการศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาได้มาป ระชุมทวนทานพระไตรปิฎกบาฬีของพม่า ที่เตรียมไว้ พร้อมทั้งพระไตรปิฎกฉบับอักษรต่างๆของนานา ประเทศ เรียกว่า “ฉัฏฐสังคีติ” อันเป็นที่ยอมรับทั่วไปในประเทศพุทธศาสนาท ั้งหลาย อย่างไรก็ดี หลังจากฉัฏฐสังคีติเสร็จสิ้นแล้วไม่นาน ได้เกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงและความผันผวนทางกา รเมืองในประเทศเมียนมาร์ ซึ่งเข้าใจว่าคงจะเป็นเหตุให้การดูแลรักษา และจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกฉบับฉัฏฐ สังคีติ ไม่ดำเนินมาอย่างราบรื่น จนเกิดมีความเข้าใจสับสนขึ้นระหว่างพระไตร ปิฎกฉบับเดิมของพม่าที่ใช้เป็นต้น ร่างสำหรับพิจารณาในการสังคายนา กับฉบับที่เป็นผลงานของการสังคายนา

บัดนี้ กองทุนสนทนาธรรมนำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ได้นำพระไตรปิฎกฉบับฉัฏฐสังคีติที่สอบทานโ ดยสงฆ์เถรวาทนานาชาตินี้ มาจัดพิมพ์ด้วยอักษรโรมันที่เป็นสากลแก่ผู ้อ่านในนานาประเทศ

จากการดำเนินการด้วยความเพียรพยายามอย่าง ตั้งใจจริง และโดยกระบวนวิธีที่รอบคอบรัดกุม จึงมีรายงานของคณะผู้ทำงานว่า ได้พบพระไตรปิฎกฉบับฉัฏฐสังคีติที่พิมพ์ต่ างวาระและสามารถกำหนดแยกได้ ระหว่างฉบับต้นร่างกับฉบับที่พิมพ์จากผลงา นอันได้ทวนทานแล้ว ตลอดจนรู้เข้าใจฉบับที่พิมพ์ครั้งต่อๆ มาได้ตามเป็นจริง ทำให้ได้ต้นฉบับที่มั่นใจที่สุด กับทั้งยังได้สอบทานกับพระไตรปิฎกฉบับอักษ รต่างๆ ของหลายประเทศซ้ำอีกครั้งหนึ่งด้วย เหมือนกับทำให้จุดหมายของฉัฏฐสังคีติบรรลุ ผลสมบูรณ์"
