The detail on this stencil work is amazing. It must take multiple artists, ladders, lamps and lookouts. How do they get it all done in time?

Hehe - brilliant. I'm so sorry that Tower Hamlets council want to remove all of his work on the basis that "it makes residents feel unsafe".

Yep, it was Banksy. A friend of mine does a club night in that building - Banksy's PR emailed the promoter apparently to ask if it was okay to do it.

I'm no expert, but (as everyone else has said) it does look Bansky-esque. I had a quick look at the pix on Londonist, and if it is him, then I'm a little disappointed in that I was under the impression that he 'struck' at night so no-one saw him at work!.

Sure Banksy has an agent (Steve Lazarides), how do you think his shows in LA, London etc. get arranged? And the auctions selling his works for 6 figures get arranged?
Banksy is mainstream now, and has been for some time.

I note from the BBC article that the photographer who caught him in the act wishes to remain anoymous whilst supposedly outing the identity of Banksy.

Makes me wonder if the photographer is Banksy and the person with the paintbrush in his hand is a stooge.

michaelpickard  Pro User  says:

@H4NUM4N: check the londonist article referenced above. It clearly says the photos were submitted by someone called 'Chloe'. No idea where auntie beeb got the 'anonymous' thing from.

Also, something that everyone is conveniently overlooking (and is insinuated by the Londonist article), the guy in the photo isn't necessarily doing the Banksy stencil, he's doing the flower beside it; and the blob of paint on the paint can. There seems to be a very real chance that these are two seperate (yet connected) works by different artists. A collab. if you will.

Interesting shot as I have read about his work in the papers, both last week and today. This was on the front page of one of the broadsheet papers today so it caught my eye here. Have to wonder why the apparent self portrait for an artist who is going out the way to remain anon. A bluff? Who knows but great sense of humour. I'd feel honoured to have that sort of art put on my wall.

Mainstream enough to warrant a front page picture in The Times today...........incredible, I don't know many other artists today that would achieve that.......

As for all the other conspiracy theory rubbish.......it doesn't matter anymore (he's hardly really anonymous!).......the man's sitting pretty........certainly doesn't harm his publicity to pretend hes still an outlaw tho.........

Great to know the banksy character is still knocking them out. last year went on a banksy tour of london arranged by a flickr folk (his name escapes me now) and there was much talk about whether banksy himself was mingled in with us - even my daughter asked "Dad, is Banksy you?"

@green_kermit, I don't blame Tower Hamlets residents for feeling 'unsafe' from graffiti in the area. It's naive to think it's all being created by commercially commissioned 'artists' like Banksy. Apart from in gentrified East London most graffiti is not created by freelance hipster graphic designers, it's done by those who have no other way of expressing themselves, ie youngsters angry about something (hence the 'unsafe') and who wont be designing Kaiser Chiefs next subversive album cover. It's also pretty much the human equivalent of a cat pissing on something to claim it, and evokes the same feeling in residents that a giant cat terrorising their neighborhood would.

Also, the graffiti in question is rubbish. FLOWERS rather than COUNCILS right? Yeah? Idiot...

In an ideal world, Tower Hamlets would keep Banksy's work as draw for tourists. I have certainly ventured into parts of London I wouldn't have otherwise to catch a glimpse of his work. I gave a couple of quid to the local economy as well, so it's not all bad. Besides, it's not graffiti that makes me feel unsafe. Only people who carry guns that do that.

@mrlerone - I take your point - I have wondered around Tower Hamlets too and to be honest some of the graffiti does make you feel unsafe. But it is also true that I enjoy this work and it makes me smile. So I guess it is a balance between the two - and it is difficult to discriminate between art that is going to make people smile and vandalism that is going to make people feel unsafe (Especially given that people will have different responses to it). All I know is that I hope that they keep Banksy work so that others can enjoy it.

@armcurl: You are right ;o) , I guess you never know whether someone is carrying a gun until they pull one out on you and yep, I could be equally scared by someone with the intent to injure me with a good old-fashioned dustbin lid.

If Tower Hamlets council wants people to feel safe on the streets maybe they should try tackling violent crime instead of graffiti; cleaning tags off the walls is a highly visible act that pleases rate-paying property owners but has no overall effect on the actual causes of crime. I don't remember the last time a drawing on a wall scared me...

Fab shot btw! Apologies for the rant.
