Women at a poultry association meeting, Afghanistan
Women members of a rural Poultry Association, Balkh province, northern Afghanistan.
Women in 11 provinces across Afghanistan are being helped to feed their families and contribute to their household’s income thanks to an Afghan government project funded by DFID.
Women in rural areas are provided with training in poultry management and given 15 chickens plus the means to construct a coop and care for their flock, including feed and medical training. Chickens can be reared for either egg production or to provide meat. Food security is a big issue in Afghanistan, where nearly a quarter of the population does not have access to enough food.
