Tiger Stadium Sign - Detroit
![]() I had to get a shot of it before they tear it down. Bennett Park was a wooden park first built on this site in 1895, hosting the home games of the Detroit Tigers. It was replaced by a steel-and-concrete stadium named Navin Field in 1912. It opened the same week as Fenway Park in Boston. It was renamed Briggs Stadium in 1938 and the Detroit Lions began playing their home games there as well. It was renamed Tiger stadium in 1961, the Lions left here in 1974, and the Detroit Tigers moved out at the end of 1999, leaving the building abandoned. As it is due to be torn down in February of 2008, in August of 2007 they auctioned off everything, signs, seats, lockers, etc. By November, all of the signs for this historic ballpark had been removed.
CommentsAlan in Portland says:The corner of Michigan and Trumbull. I saw
my first major league game there in 1955, and
many more thereafter. You felt closer to
the field than you do in modern stadiums,
even if you had crummy seats, and I had a lot
of those. Sitting behind a pole could be a
nuisance though.
ann_arbor_deadhead says:Comerica Park is nice, but it will never have
the historical gravitas of Tiger Stadium. So
many baseball immortals played there, from Ty
Cobb and Babe Ruth, to Ted Williams and Hank
Greenberg, Al Kaline, Mickey Mantle, Lou
Whitaker and Alan Trammell. bradleys0206 says:The countdown is on... by Friday, 6/6/08, the
wrecking crews are supposed to inhabit the
Stadium and the razing of Tiger Stadium is
going to begin soon after.
carriagepark says:I was there today and they've started
demolition. I went to my first ballgame
there as a child and still remember it as a
wonderful time. I will miss the
"real" Tiger stadium and really
thought someone would have come forth to
preserve it....They're probably planning
condos and a mini mall :(......

Shame they couldn't find anyone to do anything with it .... on the other hand- Comerica is simply marvelous.
