Stanley Hong's Mannia Cafe - Detroit

Stanley Hong's Mannia Cafe - Detroit by Derek Farr ( DetroitDerek ).
This one was tough to research, thanks to Mikem of detroityes.com for coming thru on this one! Located at 265 Baltimore ( both the street sign and address have been removed ) at the opening of this restaurant it was stated to be "Detroit's most beautiful Chinese-American restaurant". I believe it opened in 1968. It later closed and became the Omega Baptist Church and then the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church. Personally I am having trouble picturing this sci-fi building as a Chapel....they merely stuck a small, white cross in middle of the "horn".

It was a part of "Paradise Valley", it should be right around Hastings, I think? South of West Grand Blvd.? The last time I went by, it was a church.

I don't think it was a church. I think it was a former Chinese restaurant.. I think it was called Stanley Lim's or something like that. It was his second location. I cant recall where the first was, but he didnt have such a signature building.

I know a whole lot about this place. My aunt worked at this Stanley's from the time it opened until she retired in 1984. She started with them in 1956 when it was at 565 E. Canfield. And yes, it was a premiere chinese restaurant. She served everybody from Duke Ellington to Sammy Davis, Jr. in its days. Yes, it was a church, now it is abandoned. The restaurant is now alive and well at Woodward and 8 Mile Rd.

I pass that restaraunt every day and it never clicked that they were "related". Thanks for the info!

A gentleman from the Detroityes website happened to send me a flyer from when this building was being built.

Yes, this one is hard to research. Here it is at night in 1999. You can see why I thought it was a tiki bar. Looks like the arch over the parking lot entrance is gone now.
