Daniel, salvador

Daniel, salvador

Daniel is someone that we instantly became friends with. We started by asking for directions back to our casa particular, and he ended up acting as our guide the next day.

We take our cell phones and PDAs and laptops and iPads for granted. This guy appeared to be the exception rather than the rule in Santiago de Cuba, where I was asked by one person to send him a phone because his had broken and he couldn't afford a new one. Internet access is also extremely limited - almost everyone I spoke to provided someone else's address because they don't have their own, since getting an email address must be authorized by the government. At the hotel, the speed was so slow that it was an exercise in frustration to log in. Not a bad thing while on vacation!

Enrique

Enrique

Enrique was at the Casa de la Trova 2 nights earlier, charming many women into dancing with him (and he is a good dancer!). When we returned to look at their CDs on the last day of our time in Santiago, he was still there, and still ready to dance; there is always a group playing, day and night. After requesting my email address so we could communicate, he made this last sign to bid me goodbye.

Trovador

Trovador

The 'guapo' from three pictures later asked for help from this troubadour to sing me a song of love, in an effort to get me thinking about 'el amor' with him. Hmmm.... if only it were so easy!

Wanted: Neighbourhood Ideológico

Wanted: Neighbourhood Ideológico

Well, I'm not sure I completely captured the meaning of this person's task (the Spanish friend we met who took us around the for day spoke very rapidly in Cuban Spanish, so I caught about 85%, but not all)... but I gather that every neighbourhood in Cuba has an Ideologico (ideologist) - that is, a person that people can go to for advice, etc. I believe they are also responsible for maintaining the revolutionary spirit in the neighbourhood, but if anyone knows more about this and can correct my impressions I'd be happy to hear about it (Google wasn't very helpful).
