Had to add this story on a Fishbone show that Andy(below) and myself went to in our hometown I've been a fan of Fishbone since their first record and by chance they happened to play in my home town in some tiny basement bar. The fact that Fishbone was in town got everyone a little crazy, I did not know one person that wasn't going to the show. The night of the show we had a preparty at my girlfriends house and then all of us took off to this divey type bar downtown. Everyone was there and happy as #$%& that Fishbone was about to play. Making my way up to the front of the stage I waited with my friends for the madness to begin and begin it did. Fishbone took the stage, a tiny one at that, and started the assault on our senses. It was almost perfect. The music was great but you could tell something was up. Angelo kept looking back at Norwood like he was expecting something to happen. Norwood didn't disappoint. He started swinging his bass around hitting the other guys in the band. Angelo swung his mic stand at Norwood and I fight broke out between them on stage. Norbert tried to take it a step further by grabbing a monitor from the stage right in front of me and tried to throw it on me and my friends. Walter swung in and grabbed it from him, saving us from a hospital visit. By this time the rest of the band grabbed Angelo and Norbert and left the stage. The audience was going NUTS. No one knew what to make of this. Here is everyone's favourite band in our small home town playing to all our friends and it just imploded before our eyes and they hadn't even played for 20 minutes. The owners of the bar and the bouncers were quick to ease the crowd as a riot was ready to happen. We eventually left and went back to my girlfriends house where it turns out we were having the official after party. Back at the house everyone can't stop talking about where they were when it all went down. People are amazed and giddy at the whole thing and then Angelo walks in. My friend who owned the music shop above the bar somehow managed to make friends with Angelo and convinced him to come back to the house. Naturally everyone freaks but in a nice Canadian sort of way. We talk for a while about this and that and next thing I know Angelo is break dancing in the kitchen. Doing the worm! It was all too surreal. Angelo made friends with everyone and was in my mind nothing but the coolest guy you could meet(at a party after a near riot) A few of us were on the porch as the party was winding down and before we knew it there wasn't anyone left except the four of us. Well except for Angelo. We had no idea he was inside chillin on the couch reading a magazine while we were outside. Angelo heard us, got up from the couch and came outside. "You guys got any money?" He asked. "Um, no sorry." We replied. "My manager dropped me off and I have no money and no idea where I am" "But aren't you a rock star?" "Can you call me a cab?" By this time we were numb to this type of thing. Here is a guy who we worshiped and saw live many times to huge crowds asking us for cab fare. That just put the sugar on top of one of the most memorable nights I have ever had. Here's a review of the show www.fishbonelive.org/concert_archive/1996-09-06/497/revie... CommentsMark C. Austin
