Sea King Helicopter Reflected in Helmet Visor
A member of the ground crew watches as the Sea King Mk4 hovers overhead.
During operations in Southern Iraq, 845 & 846 Sea King Mk4 Naval Air Squadrons were tasked with multiple jobs, carrying them out during their tours of duty at Basra International Airport. Much of the tasking involved perimeter checks of Basra Airport and also troop/personnel moves to and from various locations within southern and central Iraq. The squadrons operated on a 24-hour watch system and were always on hand as a medical air ambulance, in case troops were injured out on the ground.
As a part of the continuation training, the IRT (Immediate Response Team), consisting of 2 medical staff (of the Royal Air Force), 3 Royal Navy Aircrew and 1 Sea King helicopter, conducted winching drills at Basra International Airport. All medics who are part of the IRT, have to have carried out winching training, which is controlled by the Navy aircrew man operating the winch from inside the Sea King.
