I shot this with my "walking around" camera, a Canon A530. I love this little camera. Here's the original shot:

Pretty bad, eh. With an overcast sky and all the snow, these sort of shots always play havoc with light meters... at least that been my experience. So here's what I did:

1) Created a new layer and filled it with 50% gray
2) Set the blend mode to color dodge
This goes a long way to pushing the exposure.
3) Added a curves adjustment layer to set black and white point
4) Added a hue/saturation adjustment layer to boost the green, reds and yellows
5) Flattened the layers, resized and added a final sharpening.

Between the 50% gray - color doge and the curves adjustment you can get that extreme blow out of the snow and sky (all those grays from the the original snapshot.)

Hope this helps.
