Little boy, student (1st grade), seen in the school in Koka.
The elementary school in Koka has about 25 students, from the first grade to the fourth grade. The parents can decide whether their children go to school or stay at home to help on the farm. The students can eat at school and can stay overnight, although the school is not really a boarding school. Every morning the teacher are cooking porridge in a huge pot on an open fire. The kids are waiting in line with their calabash to get their portion of porridge, sometimes also with black beans, which is their food for the whole day.
After breakfast the students sing the national anthem in front of the school while a student is setting up the Ethiopian flag.
