andy warhol banana cake

OK: back story on Deb, I never planned on doing cakes as a career. I always thought that I'd be in fine arts but unfortunately so did millions(?) of other people, lol! I am strongly influenced by pop artists so this is my homage to Andy Warhol in cake...... NOT banana cake ,alas! about 18" long

I know what you mean Debb, i wanted to be a fashion designer at uni but knew thousands of others wanted to do it too ! so i took the another route and did fashion buying and worked in overseeing fashion and clothes going into stores, at the end of the day we have to be realistic huh ! but hey you took your art to another level ! it was meant to be huh !

I love Andy, I hated the day he died, I always thought his art was so neat! I too though I would be in art. I wish I had gone onto art school as I think I would be better but I am thankful for all the art I took in High school as it does still help me each day.

Natalie..., Thank you!I started out with an art background doing very non cake things like fashion design, murals, etc... and I started working in a bakery doing cakes after just watching someone work for a week.I've worked professionally as a cake decorator for almost 20 years now.In my own business, I've been operating for two years . I thought I'd have to go back to working for someone else after a few months but it really took off and now I'm consistently busy with my shop. So long story short, since I started cakes in a bakery my cakes were always sold for money, mind you, I've gotten better as time goes on but my practice has always been on the job.

Honestly, You are so inspiring to me. I'm in your situtation then, now. I'm in my fourth year in college...of business marketing! I'm an artist at heart, but decided against studying that because of the competition and odds of success being against me.

I'm alittle terrified that I'm this far into college and am beginning to realize that I LOVE decorating and sculpting cakes. I've done about six different cakes for friends (they insisted on paying for them and did) and love it.

Do you have any suggestions? And what kind of fondant do you use, I've used gumpaste, but primarily use royal icing because fondant scares me >.<

i can tell you that the odds of making a GREAT living at cakes are very slim. I do OK but nothing compared to what someone in business might make. The hours are crazy long and I have not had a vacation in years.I do this because it's pretty much all I have ever done. If I could do cakes just for fun I would. I think I would def. appreciate it more, than HAVING to rely on it for a living.The competition for cakes is growing all the time, alas.Just my 2.5 cents. =) do what makes you happy!
