I think this moment could have been captured a bit better. You asked in a "detailed score group", so I'm going to assume you want the critique, even though it's negative. Please don't take it the wrong way!

- The Exposure of the shot is way off. On the left hand side, the sunlight is blowing out the highlights, and on the right hand side everything is in deep shadow. I think some fill-flash with a low flash compensation value would have really helped.

- The eyes - the most important part - are missing! Here's this great emotional moment, and the focal point of the shot is the girls hair! The eyes are the window...

- There are many merges between the girl's hair, and the boy's hair. The close color, and the angle of the shot, really bring this out.

- The angle you took this from (adult eye level?) doesn't really work well for me. I think this type of shot looks better either level, or looking slightly up.

- There are also merges between the girl's blond hair, and the blurred out "blond" background.

Thank you for your imput, Chris. I think that your points are very valid.

One thing that I'd love to throw out is that this isn't a 'portrait' per se. It's simply a candid of my babies. So for me, to capture the moment was more important than manipulating the details.

In response to the angle, I agree. I'm up a bit higher and a little further to the left than I would have loved to have been. They were actually sitting on the ground downhill from me. I was down as low as I could get, which definitely wasn't low enough. That also contributed to the exposure problem. The sun was setting to the left, creating the shadows to the right.

Not really sure how to correct the eyes problem, since one is facing forward and one is facing back. I'm also pretty sure she closed her eyes - she was attempting to console him from a stumble. I'd gladly take some more in depth advice on that aspect.

All-in-all, you have some very valid points, and I appreciate your critique.

Art is emotion and this brings out emotion in me. The softness of the lighting is nice. I think cropping so that the main subjects are a little off center may bring more interest. Just a thought.

This is such a touching photo. Isn't it wonderful how children are so free and willing to comfort each other? Maybe it's because they've been there, done that and they know how it feels. But it's so nice to see such young children with so much compassion!

When you see a scene like this unfolding in front of your eyes, you shouldn't worry about exposure, camera angles and lighting. I think this is just absolutely PERFECT just as it is! I don't think it could have been improved in any way. This is a wonderful photo!!!!

May I add just one more thing. If you had taken the time to adjust expsosure, subject placement, lighting, "hair blending" issues, etc., there woud have been NO PICTURE AT ALL.

You did what any good Mommy photographer would do in these circumstances. You picked up your camera and captured the MOMENT.

Trust me on this -- (I now have three adult children) -- this will be one of your children's most treasured pictures when they are grown up. They will love it far more than any flattering 'posed' picture you may have of them. One of my own kids' favorites shows them all (with their Daddy) in sillhouette . Can't really see a single face at all, but everyone recognizes who is who and they remember the moment. They LOVE that picture -- and so do I!

I'm not a participant in any "critique" group, but I'd personally rate it 10/10!
