They are indeed abundant in FL. They were everywhere in my St. Petersburg yard. They seem to be attracted to the Oak trees. I was so shocked the first time I saw one because I'm from Colorado and we don't have anything like them in the west. I wasn't even sure if it was a spider or not. These guys make some of the nices webs I have ever seen. l love 'em.

Not too much, really. I suppose their spines discourage predators, but other than that they seem like other orb weavers to me.
