UUP 2008 |
Events and moments from the life of The Unitarian Universalists of Petaluma, 2008.
On January 6, we took our annual UUP
photo right after the Sunday service.
We held a "Happy Worth Day"
all-congregation potluck on Saturday,
January 12, celebrating the inherent
worth and dignity of every person (our
first UU principle). Rev. Ben led us in
a great round of activities, songs, and
stories.
Our service on Chinese New Year
included a dragon parade, featuring a
dragon made by our kids in their
Religious Education classes that day.
On March 2, Rev. Ben acted out a
parable with six girls playing the roles
of the princesses entrusted with a
single grain of rice each while their
father took a trip.
March 15 saw a kite-flying get-together
at Ragle Park in Sebastopol, with kids
and adults enjoying the outdoors.
On April 19, members of UUP's Men's
Group joined in the all-comuunity
Rebuilding Together effort.
The weekend of April 25-27 saw several
UUP members and youth attend our Pacific
Central District Assembly in Fremont.
Flower Communion took place on May 4,
with a well-attended intergenerational
service characterized by one attendee as
"magical."
Our annual all-congregation retreat
over Memorial Day weekend saw us at Four
Springs Retreat Center in Lake County
for the fifth straight year. We relaxed,
sang, ate, worshipped, planned, and
mostly played together for a wonderful
three days.
On June 1, we had a worship service
entitled "St. Stephen With a Rose:
Ritual, Rapture, and the Grateful Dead
Experience." UUP member Mary
Goodenough spoke, and David Gans led the
singing. We decked the place out in
tie-dye and roses.
Our annual Day of the Dead
interegenerational service took place on
November 2--a mvoing demonstration of
the power of a community.
Following the Day of the Dead service,
15 UUP members joined a visibility
action against Proposition 8, the ballot
measure to revoke the right of same sex
couples to marry.
On November 9, UUP participated, along
with the congregations from Napa, Marin,
and Santa Rosa, at a "revival"
service held at the Santa Rosa church.
Our Larking About singing group joined
in with a 40-plus voice choir for
renditions of "Siyahamba,"
"This Land is Your Land," and
other songs. Over 300 people were in
attendance.
