warty swamp frog

warty swamp frog by dcysurfer.
My wife came running through the house one day in March 2007 with something gently concealed in her clasped hands. She called me to come outside with her to have a look at this tiny Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis) she'd picked up in the back garden. It hung around long enough to have its picture taken before jumping off into some bushes.

Growling Grass Frogs are classified as endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums has made 2008 (notably a leap year) the International Year of the Frog.

UPDATE

A big thanks to goes to Evan (liquid_ghoul) for a revised identification of the frog. I had incorrectly identified it as a Green and Golden Bell Frog (Litoria aurea).

I've updated the description/tags, and fixed a few typos on the page.

Great shot. This is actually closer to a Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis). Both species were introduced to New Zealand, and it seems that the New Zealand bell frogs are a mixture of the two.

You can tell it is raniformis because of the raised ridges of skin on the back. L. aurea are smooth.

I browsed through your photos and have been left in awe by the quality of the images. I'll be a regular visitor to your pages from now on.
