      Great shot! The pole and wires do not detract one bit. These great old buildings don't exist in a vacuum; they are at least partially defined by their surroundings.

      What a great way to put it. They don't exist in a vacuum and I would go further and say that in some ways their beauty stands out because of their surroundings.

      "...because of their surroundings." ....Well said.... The building above is on a corner. From my experience shooting here in Shanghai, these "corner buildings" almost always look great from diagonally across the street in a photo that shows all the poles, wires, crosswalks, bicycles, pedestrians, taxis, etc.
