Red Rock State Park
Well, after our mostly bust trip to the Great Salt Plains, we drove to
Red Rock State Park, which has some interesting medium-tall bluffs,
with yuccas, resurrection fern, and western red cedars. The sky was
lovely for dramatic scenics. In this shot, I shot from the base of
the cliff...up at this lone clifftop juniper.
I'm learning how to do a few things in PhotoShop (tutorial book), so I
had to practice and I thought you might enjoy it. Original will be
linked below.
Please tell me if you like it (not that I'll do all my photos that
way...but for spotlighting this section, it seemed to work).

Mmmmm.... I'm wondering if saturation would do the trick without the spotlighting or a bit less of it.. I'll think about it. It's good to experiment though and to get some feedback.

Fantastic and dramatic-it really focuses on the tree and brings out the gorgeous sky!

I like the colors better on the first one because of processing...not too crazy about the vignetting look of it....though it's not a bad image either. I think if the tree wasn't smack dab in the middle it would be a little stronger in composition. But with all that being said...it's fun to try other things and see how they work for you.

i think it worked well - the levels look adjusted for the better and i find sometimes the camera just doesn't quite capture the color on some things like rocks, so i can see how some saturation would help.
i think the spotlight is a bit too heavy, but serves a good purpose for the focal point.... i might have personally brought out some highlights of the tree.
nice photo though, cool place :-)

It does bring attention to the tree, I like the details on the rock too!
cormack13 (51 months ago | reply)
The color looks a lot better in the processed one..
jacki-dee (51 months ago | reply)
The tree is a real eye-grabber once you've tweaked the photo. As for the centering, now I'll be cruising your photos looking for examples.

Danny, it definitely does a good job of bringing attention to the tree. Looks like an interesting area!

I like the nice rich tones and depth after the tinkering.
Well done!
Abizeleth (51 months ago | reply)
I like the saturation, too -- it really helps. I wonder if the vignetting wasn't quite so dark if it would work better. I also like the idea of trying to crop the photo so the tree is off-centered. Overall, though, I think it works.
I do enjoy tinkering around in photoshop. I've saved some otherwise dreadful photos that way. It looks like your starting point was pretty nice in this case, though.
dbarronoss (51 months ago | reply)
@Abizeleth, thanks...I usually try to start with a good photo to start with. I have several months possible postings waiting...so not like I don't have plenty to choose from :) I like to take photos too well...they back up on me.
