Tommasini's Lilac Crocus

Tommasini's Lilac Crocus

This little gem is a good naturalizer (though it can't compete with thick sod) and a lovely reminder of spring. It hails from Bulgaria, Hungary, and what used to be called Yugoslavia. It prefers a cooler and somewhat moister regime than many crocuses (which may make it easier to cultivate).
This will likely be the last spring crocus photo, as 1) I don't have any more (well maybe one) yet to bloom and 2) I have to go spend some time again with my Mother (who seems to be not improving, if not declining). I don't expect to be gone as long as before, but I just don't know.

Crocus korolkowii

Crocus korolkowii

This little crocus is native to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, & northward through Russia to the Kara Tau mountains, and puts on an early show (as do all the species I've listed). It also is quite happy in my extremely well-drained ditch side planting.
While orangey, something about them screams RED/BURNING/BLAZING to me.

Weather conditions allowing (crocus don't open when it's not sunny), I have one or two more crocus species to photograph this week.

Crocus x jessoppiae

Crocus x jessoppiae

A very lovely white crocus (with a blue tinge) that is was quite striking when it opened this morning.
I caught it and a golden neighbor (which I'll upload maybe tomorrow) at the same time.

WolfsBane (or Winter Aconite)

WolfsBane (or Winter Aconite)

This tiny buttercup has just opened today, the first of this season. I should have at least 50 (if not 100) of them popping during the next two weeks or so.
Very welcome...though they have to be photographed when the sun is shining on them (or they're not open).
