Flatiron Building, New York
I love the Flatiron Building at the corner of Broadway and 19th in Manhattan. Aside from the fact that it is triangular, the detail in the masonry is fabulous and the overall building has a very appealing aesthetic to me.
Rather than (or, OK, in addition to) taking the usual wide-angle shots, I wanted to capture the pattern formed by the repetition on the windows so opted for a long lens from as far away as I could get (about 2 blocks north) and came up with this composition.

Brooklyn Bridge
Nikki and I got back from New York about an hour ago. I'm 20% done downloading the images I took but here's one just to give me something to show this weekend. I have a busy week ahead so don't expect to be able to post anything serious until probably next weekend at the earliest.
Yesterday morning, I headed to the financial district with a few shots in mind and figured I would also take a quick look at the Yankees' ticker tape parade that was going on. In the end, I got caught in a crowd of about half a million people and ended up spending most of my time trying to get out of said crowd, navigate may way around many apparently gratuitously positioned police barriers and get back to midtown and our hotel.
Prior to getting mixed up in the melee, I had walked across the Brooklyn Bridge (taking this and many more cliched shots on the way over) then wandered around Brooklyn itself before walking back.
I think yesterday's route probably had me walking about 15 miles over 7 hours with a similar march the previous day. My legs are still complaining but I'm happy to have about 600 exposures to sort through now and a lot of HDRs to process.

Central Presbyterian Choir
This is the talented group of people that I am proud to sing with on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Actually, this photo also includes members of Wild Basin Winds who accompanied our performance of John Rutter's "Requiem" last Sunday morning.
Although I'm happy to admit this isn't the best group portrait ever taken, I am sure it's the best group portrait I've ever taken and it certainly involved a bit of forethought.
Ambient light in the church was pretty low so I augmented it with 2 SB-600 Speedlights, each gelled with CTO, one on each of the side balconies. I then shot the picture from the back balcony with the wonderful 70-200mm f2.8, triggering the flashes via CLS from the on-camera popup. The camera was set to manual with the main light on the right as you look at the picture set to full power and the opposite light dialed down a stop.
Thanks for Joe McNally and his excellent books for giving me the courage to try this!

Heroes of the Alamo, Texas State Capitol
The sky was beautifully blue yesterday. I was down at the Capitol again for the Texas Book Festival but shot a few more frames of some of the monuments and statues including this one, the Heroes of the Alamo memorial.
This was shot without a polariser (which I had forgotten to transfer into my small bag). I'm willing to bet that the sky would have been almost black had I remembered to bring the filter. Maybe next time...

Smiley Balloon at the State Capitol
We spent some time down at the Texas State Capitol again today. My writer wife was attending the Texas Book Festival so we all tagged along and had a good time. The kids especially enjoyed the area around 11th and Congress which was filled with tents specifically for kids - kids authors signing books, kids entertainers singing, crafts for kids, etc. ,etc. All the tents containing activities for children were marked with these wonderful balloon stacks topped with a large smiley face.
