Coal Power Plant

Coal Power Plant by davipt.
Coal Power Plant south-west of Düsseldorf and Neuss. See also the power-plant in a wider angle.

Update: black and white version here.

Update 2: when this photo was processed by iPhoto, the dumb application lost the exif information. I've since uploaded a newer version with the exif intact, which can be seen here.

I like the contrast between the dark clouds and smoke and the vivid green of the grass.

I love the spooky HDR effect. Thanks for sharing this great photo with the Creative Commons. I paired it with an article on Policy Innovations comparing central and local approaches to climate change in China and the United States.

@invisible consequential: thank you for selecting my photo for your great article, even though it's kind of unfair ;) to use a German coal power plant to talk about USA's (and China's) fuel consuption ;) You know, even though these German guys have the fastest and best cars in the world, they do care alot about pollution and fuel consumption and make sure those cars can take the biggest quantity of horse power (sorry, Kilo Watts) from each litre of gas, not like the big unefficient engines from the american cars.

glad you liked the article. it's true that the german power plant was a bit of a stretch for the discussion of chinese and american climate policies, but the photo was just too nice to pass up. american average fuel economy is preposterously low, even with the recent increase!

Nice photo. I can't imagine living in one of those houses.

davipt  Pro User  says:

@Boy27wonder: the smoke looks bad (and even worse due to the HDR processing), but the air quality is not that bad on those places. I'd still rather not live there, but those Germans take care as much as possible about reducing the amount of pollution.

Nice artistic endeavor but that's not smoke. The large dominant stack in the front and the ones behind it are cooling towers that produce nothing but water vapor. The skinny stacks to the right are the only ones that emit gases and since water is used for web scrubbers to prevent pollution that is only water vapor too.
