Great Horned Owl nestling

Great Horned Owl nestling

Bubo virginianus.

Another shot of the nest I've been photographing for the past couple of weeks. I don't think the chick is really leaning on the limb; it's just leaning over the edge of the nest that's directly behind the limb. I like the illusion, though.

The owlet is nearly ready to fledge. Tonight, just after dark, it climbed (using both its bill and talons) two or three steps up onto that limb and stayed for all of about three seconds before hopping back into the nest, wings flapping. It should be scrambling all over the nest tree any day now.

Great Horned Owl parent & nestling

Great Horned Owl parent & nestling

Bubo virginianus.

Whether you call it parental allopreening, nuzzling, or just good old-fashioned TLC, the chick seems to like it! I captured this image after hours of waiting below the nest in the damp cold of a moonless February night. It was too dark to tell exactly what was going on in the nest (including which direction the birds were facing), but I got lucky on this one.

Haha... I just realized that this shot and the one before it are quite similar! Which one do you prefer?
